I know that this blog has got its readers used to posts with high intellectual content and mind-boggling debates. However, this time I decided to confer a post some well-deserved eye candy, and give a pack of gorgeous heroines their due credit. Due to my recent addiction to criticising and making top ten rankings (in my mind and in my bed), I’m going to give you my personal list of the ten sexiest girls and women in the DC Comics universe. Enjoy!
Before we begin, a few ground rules and specifications: the ten winners (of my respect) are in random order, so it doesn’t necessarily mean that I like no. 1 better than no. 8. In addition, if a certain character is particularly sexy in a particular run or drawn by a specific artist, I will specify it.
Also, I don’t consider the characters sexualised or objectified representations, but just exaggerated comics depictions born out of fantasy, as they are supposed to be. No disparaging judgements or comparisons with real-life counterparts. It’s all part of the game. The heroines, all badass characters, are as exaggerated and unbelievable as the six-packs on Superman or Batman (this applies to other men of course, because my six-pack it’s so real it can pack a very good punch on its own). Sooo, andiamo!
#10 – Cheetah
For the sake of decency which is characteristic of this blog, I chose one of the images where the feline bosom is smallest, so to give you a nice idea of the character’s hmm.. potential.
Like practically all long-standing comics characters, Cheetah has had different aliases and her origin stories have changed, but suffice it to say that the archaeologist Barbara Ann (baa baa baa) Minerva, obsessed with immortality, took part in an ancient ritual to turn herself into the avatar of the god Urzkartaga (sic), and gain incredible power. Little did she know, the ritual needed the host to be a virgin–which (yoohoo), she wasn’t–so she became a human cheetah, cursed with an insatiable hunger for human flesh.
DC Comics are no stranger to human-feline interactions, and I find Cheetah one of the sexiest. The color of her fur and the spots add to a fascinating effect, doubled by the fact that she is a villain. One of Wonder Woman’s major ones, in fact, and the main antagonist in the sequel film Wonder Woman 1984, slated for 2020. Kristen Wiig might seem an odd choice to impersonate this sinuous feline killer, but I have faith in her.
#9 – Zatanna
Not only is Zatanna one of the most powerful magicians in the DC universe, she is also one of the sexiest. What self-respecting hero(ine) would be able to resist the spells of her mouth (she needs to speak the magic words backwards for the spell to work) and her stockings? Not sure which one has more magic.
Zee is the daughter of the adventurer John Zatara and Sindella, from whom she inherited heroism and the ability to use magic. She is a long-standing member of the tribe of sorcerers called the ‘Hidden Ones’ or ‘Homo Magi’, and of the Justice League (currently JL Dark). I wish she were a long-standing member of my inner circle as well.
#8 – Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris)
Many characters have taken on the identity of Star Sapphire, but my favourite remains Carol Ferris. She has the double badasserie of being Hal Jordan’s (Green Lantern) boss as the head of Ferris Air, and his main love interest. In the ill-fated movie version of GL, Carol is portrayed by Blake Lively (very good choice).
However, shortly after Hal was chosen to become a Green Lantern, Carol was possessed by the Star Sapphire cosmic gem, which granted her wondrous powers, but at the cost of changing her personality. For this reason, in the years she has both been a villain and an ally to our beloved Lantern. Which makes her even more sexy, in my opinion.
Needless to say, the Star Sapphire uniform is so deliberately over the top that it goes beyond sexy, and becomes almost caricatural. The super heroine dichotomy of 'big boobs, small waist' is brought to another level, culminating in the self-sustaining nipple caps. I don’t know whether to laugh or ogle in awe.
#7 – Starfire
Not to be confused with Firestar, who first appeared in Marvel’s animated TV Series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, which was very popular in Italy in the 90s. Aside from the unnecessary confusion, DC’s Starfire is actually one year older, having appeared first in 1980, whereas Spidey’s TV show was broadcast in 1981.
You might be starting to notice a pattern with redheads here, and I plead totally guilty. Together with being a very badass powerful character, and having dated Dick Grayson for a while (did somebody say best Robin ever?), former Princess Koriand'r of Tamaran is also very hot, combing skimpy purple clothing, orange skin, green eyes and flaming hot hair (literally).
I like Starfire in basically every outfit, as the hair-skin-eyes combination is my favourite, but it is worth mentioning that her depiction caused some controversy at the time of the New 52 initiative, when Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 showed her like this:
To their credit, she had lost her memory…
#6 – Poison Ivy
First appearing in Batman #181 (1966), Poison Ivy is one of the most beloved foes of the caped crusader, occasionally fighting on the same side.
The botanist Dr Pamela Isley was deceived by her College Professor–and paramour–Dr Jason Woodrue, who injected her with a plant-based poison, changing her appearance and physiology forever. Reborn as Poison Ivy, Pamela is very strong, being able to control plant life and to glamour and bend people to her will (as brilliantly shown in the film Batman & Robin). Together with being deadly powerful, she is a formidable foe and a very fascinating character because her motivations stem from criticism to the human world for causing plant to suffer. All of this, and of course her crazy charm as a sinuous redhead (personal weakness). Also, the combination of tones of her green clothing makes readers wonder if she is naked underneath. Add to that that in recent stories she seems to have grown a very intimate bond with Harley Quinn, and we’ve already gone cross-eyed.
#5 – Selina Kyle/Lois Lane (Batman #36-37, 2018)
Ok, ok, I know: two characters in the same spot? Not to mention two major ones in DC history? Let me explain, horde of infuriated devoted readers. I do appreciate Lois and Selina/Catwoman as characters, with their intelligence and their courage (gosh, Selina deserves immense praise just for making the dark knight decide to tie the knot!), but I have never found them outstandingly sexy or particularly beautiful. Until the “Superfriends" arc written by Tom King and drawn by Clay Mann earlier this year. In this genuinely fun and light-hearted story, Superman and Batman decide to go on a double date with their respective wives and soon-to-be wives. They go to a Luna Park, which happens to have a costumed hero theme. So, they all decide to swap clothes (men and women), and leave worries behind for a night. Well, here, with no particular outfits, Mann delivers the sexiest Lois and Selina I can think of. Maybe you don’t need much to create charm with charisma. Enjoy the gallery.
I must add that Clay Mann’s portrayal of Lois is my favourite in general.
#4 – Hawkgirl
Although she has only gained a bit of recognition outside comics in recent years, with the Justice League Animated Series and the Legends of Tomorrow show, Hawkgirl has been around the DC universe since 1940. She is the reincarnation of the Egyptian princess Chay-Ara. Married to prince Khufu (maybe from Sicily?), they found a crashed ship that gave them superhuman powers, and the ability to fly with the aid of wings made of Nth metal. They were unfortunately cursed by Hath-Set, damned to reincarnate through the generations, and die at the peak of their love.
Hawkgirl has had many representations in the years, and multiple aliases. In all cases, I’ve always found her very sexy, with her skimpy yellow tank top, the mask, and the flying red hair as Shiera Hall. However, I give the laurel of sexiest mulier falco to Kendra Saunders, the latest to wear the mythical wings. I guess the short dark hair and dark skin give her a more Egyptian look than the pale white depictions of the past generations. I find her very intriguing.
#3 – Talia al Ghul
One of the flaws I find with Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises is the unjust treatment given to Talia, who is revealed and dies in a matter of minutes. I love Talia’s character, the daughter of the demon, the immortal Ra's (della fossa) al Ghul. She is one of the most charismatic and fiercest of Batman’s lovers (she also received his sacred semen), and for me she ranks higher than Catwoman.
There is no fixed visual representation for Talia. Throughout the years, she has changed outfits and uniforms, together with allegiances in loving Batsies and trying to kill him. Anyway, a common thread is that she has flowing dark hair, a highly trained deadly body: she is mysterious and sexy as hell. Even in her recent appearance, when she fights Batman and Catwoman in the hidden city of Khadym, she is as deadly as she pulls off the femme fatale. Choose her, Bats!
#2 – Wonder Woman
Diana of Themiscyra needs no introduction (hopefully). The Princess of the Amazons, the daughter of Queen Hippolyta and a pot of clay (I believe you, George Perez), Wonder Woman is one of DC’s strongest and most beloved characters. She is a stable member of the Justice League, and has had romances with Superman and Steve Trevor. Sometimes she can fly, sometimes she can’t. Depends on the versions and on the weather, I guess.
My fascination with Wonder Woman comes from the combination of her depth as a character, her strength and her looks. No matter whether she wears star-spangled undies or long pants covering her beautiful strong thighs, Diana is always in great shape. Her flowing black hair on her naked shoulders creates an iconic mix of power and sensuality that I find unrepeatable in any other American comics heroines. By far, one of my favourite female characters! Gal Gadot is also really nice!
You look good in a robe too, Diana |
#1 – Supergirl
Thanks to the CW TV show, Supergirl is gaining more recognition after the movie from 1984. It was about time. Different from being simply ’Superman with a skirt’ (which wouldn’t be a bad thing in its own right), Supergirl is a more interesting character that creates a nice contrast with her cousin Supes. Contrary to appearances, Supergirl is actually older than her cousin Kal-El, and she left Krypton as a teenager. Therefore, unlike Superman, she remembers what life was like with her now dead family, and has one more burden to bear as she needs to come to grips with her superhuman powers very quickly, because she didn’t have a whole childhood on earth to learn.
That said, she’s cute as hell. There’s a reason why she’s the only blondie on this list, because she pulls it off greatly whether with short or long hair. Her costume has changed throughout the years, alternating shorter and shorter miniskirts (to the point of practically becoming a pair of red panties) and pants. However, I personally prefer her upper half and her penetrating blue eyes. Combine that with superhuman power, heat vision, ice breath… What a nice view to see flying in the sky up above.
One, actually two big special mentions deserves Power Girl, Supergirl’s alternate version from Earth-2. Apparently, she is more mature than Supergirl in many respects.
And that was my sexy top 10. Do you agree with my list? Probably not, but at least I hope you had fun reading it. Because if you enjoyed it half as much as I enjoyed it, then I enjoyed it twice as much as you.
Ci si sente,
Fred
